  • NY Times Wind Power Politics

6 page article on the POLITICS of Wind Power and the Production Tax Credits………. 33% of new power in USA was WIND last year…….
Last year, onshore wind power added more than 5,200 megawatts of new electrical capacity to the grid — or nearly a third of America’s new generating capacity, surpassing all other forms of new generation except natural gas and amounting to enough electric capacity to power one and a half million homes. While it’s true that wind is still a tiny part of the energy picture — just 1 percent of the total electricity portfolio in the United States and 3.3 percent in Europe — more than a quarter of the 20,000 megawatts of the world’s new wind capacity last year was installed in North America, where all the global wind-energy players have set up shop, lured by the low U.S. dollar and the high rate of returns. “In America,” explains António Mexia, chief executive for Energias de Portugal, which bought the Texas wind company Horizon Energy, “you can put up a 200- or 300-megawatt wind park. You can’t do that in Europe.” Indeed, in the continental United States, resources are vast — with more than eight thousand gigawatts of potential electricity blowing overhead. “The amount of wind energy potential in this country,” says Walt Musial, a principal engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s National Wind Technology Center, “is bigger than the national grid itself

Senate Support Builds for Comprehensive, Bipartisan Energy Legislation

“Gang of 16″ Expands to “Gang of 20″

WASHINGTON, DC – The effort to pass bipartisan, comprehensive energy legislation gained steam today with the announcement that the “Gang of 16” has expanded to include four more Senators, including Senator Salazar. This new “Gang of 20” includes ten Republican and ten Democratic Senators who have voiced support for the comprehensive New Energy Reform Act of 2008, or ‘New ERA,’ an energy proposal to reduce gas prices, lessen our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, and strengthen America’s economy.

“With gas prices taking such a toll on American families, we have to break the gridlock in the U.S. Senate and deliver energy solutions to the American people,” said Senator Salazar. “The New ERA bill is a great starting point, and I’m proud that four more of my Senate colleagues have joined us in the effort to move beyond partisanship toward real, honest energy solutions for American families.”

In addition to Sen. Salazar, the “Gang of 20” includes: U.S. Senators Kent Conrad, D-ND, Saxby Chambliss, R-GA, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., Mary Landrieu, D-La., Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Mark Pryor, D-Ark., Ben Nelson, D-Neb. • Kansas Taking the Lead in Wind Power

my congrats to the Jayhawks for getting onboard 4 renewables!!!!
DENVER – Kansas Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson told Democratic National Convention delegates Tuesday that the state is emerging as a national leader in alternative energy.

About a year ago, Parkinson said, Kansas had 364 megawatts of wind power. At year’s end, it will produce 1,015 megawatts, making Kansas No. 7 in the nation in wind production.

“We’ll be doing it all without mandates,” he said.

Parkinson is Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ point man on meeting her goal of producing 10 percent of Kansas’ energy from wind power by 2010 and 20 percent by 2020.

Sebelius blocked two proposed coal plants in western Kansas that are strongly backed by legislative leaders while working with utilities and state energy regulators to encourage wind development, he said.

  • Hurricane Ike and $5 Per Gallon Gas

one simple hurricane and the PRICE SURGES to $5 per gallon!!! WHAT will we do when RUSSIA cuts off the pipelines???? What will we do when IRAN stops passage into the Straits of Hormuz???? What will we do when Israel nukes IRAN????? People, you better WAKE UP and SMELL the High price of GASOLINE quickly instead of doing NOTHING, we must push WIND to get us away from OIL DEPENDENCE!! As Jerry McQuire said”” HELP ME TO HELP YOU”"”!!!
HOUSTON – From Florida to Tennessee, and all the way up to Connecticut, people far from Hurricane Ike’s destruction nonetheless felt one of its tell-tale aftershocks: gasoline prices that surged overnight — to nearly $5 a gallon in some places.

Fears of supply shortages, and actual fuel-production disruptions, resulting from Ike’s lashing of vital energy infrastructure led to pump price disparities of as much as $1 a gallon in some states, and even on some blocks.

Late Saturday the U.S. Minerals Management Service said there were two confirmed reports of drilling rigs adrift in the central Gulf of Mexico.

Compounding the jitters and higher costs for gasoline retailers was the fact that some big refineries along the Gulf Coast had been shut for nearly two weeks following Hurricane Gustav. Power outages caused by Ike threatened to keep millions of gallons of gasoline output idled for at least several days.

The price of regular gasoline soared as high as $4.99 a gallon in Knoxville, Tenn. on Saturday, up from $3.66 a day earlier.
